Dead Drift - Action, Romance, and a Satisfying Resolution

Dead Drift by Dani Pettrey is the final installment in the Chesapeake Valor series introduced in 2016. Just like its predecessors, it's thoroughly engaging with the perfect combination of action, suspense, and romance, which makes it appealing for both male and female readers.

If you've read the other books in the series, you know each book has focused on one of four childhood friends: Griffin, Parker, Declan, and Luke. All have ended up in some type of law enforcement profession or espionage organization. Dead Drift focuses on Luke Gallagher and his long-suffering love interest Kate Maxwell.

In Dead Drift, Luke, Kate, Declan and Tanner are racing against time to stop a catastrophic terrorist attack on America. This particular plot line was handled very realistically, and I could see something like this happening given the current world climate.

In addition, two ongoing mysteries introduced in the first book are finally resolved. Readers will discover what really happened to Griffin's sister and why Luke disappeared for years.

Pettrey really does write good action and her characters are rich and multi-dimensional. It was easy to become emotionally attached to them, and I'm a little distraught that I must now say goodbye to them.

As with all Dani Pettrey books, you won't find any foul language or sex scenes. However, the romance isn't sterile. There's plenty of sizzle. Also, the characters are Christians and there is a fair amount of discussion about faith and God, and the characters pray regularly. It's not preachy, so even if you're not a Christian, you still should find the story intriguing. I like the Christian slant.

The big question for most people when reading a series is if the current book is a standalone book. This could be read without having read the other books because you do get back story; however, to truly appreciate Dead Drift, I think you should read the other books first. It wraps things up in such a satisfying way that I think you can only fully appreciate it if you know the entire story.

Dead Drift is a book I'd read again and gets a five-star rating from me.

Have you read the entire series? Who was your favorite character? Which book did you like best? Were you satisfied with the conclusion?
