Brunch at Bittersweet Café

by Carla Laureano

Brunch at Bittersweet Café is the second novel in Carla Laureano’s Super Club series and it’s a superb recipe for entertainment.

A great book has many ingredients. First, it needs strong, loveable characters I can relate to, and Melody Johansson if she were real would have a lot in common with me. Dashed hopes and disastrous past relationships resonated with me. At one point she asks the questions, “Why doesn’t anyone ever choose me?” I've asked that question many times because sometimes it would nice to be the choice. Another great quote was, “So why am I spending all my effort not having a life in case I get a life later? It’s stupid.” Ouch, that might have hit too close to home.

Add a swoony-worthy male character like Justin Keller, who was the right mix of sexy, complicated, and tender-hearted. “He was not nearly the man she thought he was. But he suddenly wished he could be.” Justin possessed all of the best qualities one might find in a man.

Incorporate a few bittersweet moments that evoke a deep sense of sadness like those between Melody and her mother and Melody and Justin, which definitely pull the heartstrings of the reader.

Mix that with the theme of living your dream and how sometimes you have to make a heartbreaking choice to make your dream come true.

Finally, stir in some familiar characters (Alex, Rachel, and Ana), and you have a complete success.

Tender, sometimes sad and sometimes funny, Brunch at Bittersweet Café is a well-baked faith-based romance with memorable characters you’ll wish were your real friends. Carla Laureano's five-star recipe is masterful.
