Don’t Give Up by Kyle Idleman released today, and it’s
another inspirational offering that deals with life’s challenges. In usual
Idleman fashion, you’ll find humor, scripture, and pertinent real-life stories.
One of his personal stories made me laugh so hard I cried. And several of his
stories about other people made me cry because they were so tender. That’s the
beauty of his books. A person can’t read them and not feel deeply about
the people he writes about.
There’s a lot packed into this book, and you may not want to put it down once you get started. I purposely paced myself so I could soak it all in, but it was hard to do. Here are some takeaways from the book:
-
Everything involves risk, but playing it safe is the greatest risk of all.
- Fear convinces us to give up before we’ve even tried, but if we’ll grab hold of God and not let go, He’ll give us Himself.
- As long as you see yourself as a victim, you won’t experience the taste of victory. We have a hope (Hebrews 6:19).
- God’s heart aches because your heart aches, and He’s moved to tenderness and compassion. He asks, “Why don’t you let me carry that for you?”
- If you fix your eyes on Jesus, it makes you free of what others think (FOWOT).
- When you believe a lie to be true, you give it the same power as if it were true. Satan uses lies to ruin our lives.
- Every sin is rooted in unbelief because it’s the opposite of faith.
- If you are progressing in your faith, you will deal with criticism, ridicule, and persecution. You can either become discouraged or determined. The point at which you’re ready to quit is likely the turning point.
- The key to persevering is to focus on one step at a time. Just show up. The finish line is closer than you think.
- Strength and courage are directly related to whether your confidence is legit. We confuse confidence in ourselves with confidence in Christ. We need to remember Jesus is always better than our circumstances.
- Jesus endured the cross for the joy set before Him. That joy is you and me. Don’t give up.
